O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. Her family raised her by their grandparents in Wheaton in Illinois and graduated in 1981, with a degree from the Wheaton North High School. The model appeared in commercials for some time prior to moving to Los Angeles. O'Grady began her career modelling in Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She starred in the romantic comedy film She's Having a Baby. She then played a recurring part in the ABC comedy China Beach with Dana Delany. Alongside guest-starring on other shows and appearing in independent and produced for television, she also appeared as the main character in several television series. Donna Abandando was her first big role on ABC's police show NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the tall-haired team secretary for ABC's NYPD Blue between 1993 until the year 1996. Every year, she was awarded Emmy Award nods for Outstanding actress in the Drama Series. She won the Screen Actors Guild Award in 1995 for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series.
